Zero-emission vehicles: How many newly registered in 2023?

In 2023, 1,548,417 new zero-emission passenger cars were registered in the EU. This corresponds to a share of 14.5% in all new registrations of passenger cars in EU countries. 

The highest shares of zero-emission passenger cars in new registrations were noted in Sweden (38.6%), Denmark (36.1%) and Finland (33.8%), while the lowest shares were recorded in Croatia (2.6%), Slovakia (2.9%) and Czechia (3.1%).

Regarding other zero-emission vehicles, EU countries reported 100 817 newly registered light lorries (maximum mass up to 3.5 tonnes); 5 262 motor coaches and buses; 4 037 heavy lorries (maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes); and 899 road tractors.

With the number of new zero-emission passenger car registrations in EU countries exceeding 1.5 million, this number was approximately 70 times higher than in 2013 and 11 times higher than in 2018. 

In 2023, the share of newly registered zero-emission motor coaches and buses in the total new registrations of these kinds of public transport vehicles was 15.3%, up from 0.5% in 2013.

The share of new registrations of zero-emission light lorries reached 7.3%, while the share for zero-emission heavy lorries and road tractors amounted to 3.2% and 0.5%, respectively.

Methodological notes

A zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) does not emit exhaust gas or other pollutants from the onboard source of power. The corresponding types of motor energy are ‘battery-only electricity’ and ‘hydrogen and fuel cells’.
